Three Years a Prime Minister - The Remarkable Times of Spencer Perceval
Synopsis This play not only tells the story of the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated, but it explores the stoic manner in which he governed our country during very challenging and turbulent times for our country. It also gives an insight into the vested interests that may have ‘sponsored’ his killing. We start with Perceval’s surprise appointment, by the ailing King George, as Prime Minister, combining also the position of Chancellor, and Leader of the House. He then has to cope with threats of a French invasion, possible war with America, Industrial and social unrest, the illness of the King, the wastefulness of The Prince Regent, and stern resistance to our country’s efforts to stop the slave trade. Many famous names from our country’s history are featured in this thoroughly researched and dramatic account of events during 1809 to 1812, including Napoleon Bonaparte, King George 3rd, The Prince Regent, The Duke of Wellington , American President Maddison, William Cobbett and William Wilberforce. And, of course, the murderer, John Bellingham, who shot Perceval in the lobby of The House of Commons. We know he did the deed, but who put him up to it? This blockbuster of a play may help you decide… There are lots of great roles, and this is an opportunity for a drama group to produce an historic ensemble piece, with numerous chances for many members to showcase versatility in portraying varying characters. And possible opportunities for newcomers to try their hand, in smaller roles. It is a full-length play, approximately 90-100 minutes duration, and, with imaginative lighting, sound, and appropriate music of the era, a truly memorable production is possible... A number of significant key roles, plus endless opportunities for members to show versatility by doubling trebling up, or even quadrupling up, playing numerous roles each. It can also be performed as a 'radio style play' with scripts in hand.
