Anorexia is one of the most common eating disorders. For teenage girls in particular, aggressive dieting and food restriction is in response to low self-esteem, suppression of uncomfortable emotions, depression, cultural beauty ideals, and unrealistic perceptions of their own body image. In this frank and perceptive monologue we look at the problem through Emily’s eyes: ‘Yay! Two pounds down and only ten more to go! (laughs to herself) Just wait til they see me! Those kids at school are gonna turn pea-green for sure.’
