Dick Whittington sets out to find fame and fortune, in London, to enable him to look after his Granny, Fanny Flip Flops and the other orphans at Spotty Bottom Farm.
On the way he helps a weak old lady who gives him her cat, and tells him he has three big wishes.  He shrugs that off, but, after continuing his journey he gets tired and lonely, and he and the cat sit down for a sleep. And he says “I wish you were big and could talk”.
There is a big puff of smoke, and he awakens to find that the cat is replaced by a much bigger cat, which can talk!  When they get to London they find manual work by helping
Lord Fitztightly, and this impresses the daughter, Alice. But this upsets the Cook, Penny Pigswill, who tries to get him sacked. Especially as her other half is the local Beadle, Sam Slitherer, who is involved in crime, and colluding with Penny to con her
boss out of his fortune. They realise that Dick and the cat could foil their plans, so they frame Dick for stealing from his boss and Dick has to leave London. Meanwhile, Lord F is tricked by Slitherer ( who is dressed as a pirate) into an overseas venture
that loses him money.  However, suddenly Granny Fanny re-appears! She has regularly
received letters from Dick, and even Kit Kat, and totally misunderstands them, thinking that Dick is ill, and missing her.  So she hastily makes her way to the outskirts of London and meets Dick and Kit Kat!
Dick is persuaded by both of them to go back into London and fight against the odds, and to help retrieve Lord F’s fortune.

Dick also uses his one remaining wish… And discovers where the merchandise really is! This leads to Dick and co travelling to Nerdia, and selling Lord F’s tea pots to Crown Prince Pillock, then tracing and getting even with , Slitherer and Penny, and recovering the lost fortune for Lord F, who rewards him. There is a frantic final scene , when Slitherer and co are confronted by a tiger, andcaptured by Dick, whose fame spreads. In recognition of his achievements he is made Lord Mayor of London. He also wins the hand of Alice. Granny Fanny gets off with Lord F. And Kit Kat gets a partner
too!
