A play in 2 acts

A winter’s night in 1922, the snug bar of The Volunteer Inn by the north Norfolk coast. Alastair Scanlon and Stewart Lomax, former subalterns in the local regiment, have been invited to dinner by James de Villiers, the son of the local nobleman, with whom they served in The Great War. Their way is blocked by a fallen tree. A tale of love, sacrifice, bravery, cowardice, greed, blackmail and murder unravels. The values of the audience are challenged, with whom do their sympathies lie, the victim or the murderers? The story touches on the implication of being gay in the past, and maybe, the mental effect of war and loss. This is a ‘whydunit’ rather than a ‘whodunit’.  A seemingly foolproof plan has been hatched, but the resulting death comes to the attention of a London detective, who investigates further than expected, leading to an unexpected denouement.
