The Stewarts are a relatively happy family but individually, they suffer setbacks. In the process, they each try to conceal both their particular involvements and their concerns with these troubling features. Phil’s brother Haydon is found to have drowned following a seemingly lone trip out in his fishing boat. The situation is deemed to have been an accident … but rumours spread by children have led to the instigation of further police investigations regarding the fishing trip. This leads Val to suspect that her husband was somehow involved in his brother’s death. In turn, Phil then presses his wife about her past involvement with Haydon. An old letter written by Haydon suddenly comes to light which gives everyone some resolution regarding the mystery fishing trip and also offers the victims of the letter-author’s abuse, the incredulous gift of a free wish. The question is, how believable are the lines in the letter … and did the letter genuinely emanate from the deceased person. The whole play is set at around the Christmas period … and spanning a few Christmases over a period of ten years: Hence the older Phil and Val are able to look back (In their imagination) at scenes played out by their younger counterparts.
